Background
Share and Care Nepal has been working alongside the community at Pharping since 10 years. Pharping Clinic started from a one room dispensary which was a cowshed belonging to local hermits. Over a period of time, the intervention expanded to an integrated community based health and development program for 6 surrounding VDCs. In the process the community was equipped to address relevant issues related to their development through capacity strengthening programs.
While Share and Care was preparing to withdraw from Pharping and reach out to other communities, a few enlightened community leaders and educationists came together and explored the idea of establishing a graduate school at Pharping. With support from Share and Care they established a library which was part of the university registration requirements for graduate schools.
Following this development, there was a series of discussions and meetings to expand the resources of the school and actively involve the community members in learning and information dissemination for upliftment. Through this process the idea of a school for community was born, with a larger vision and involving the entire community. The school became more than a campus and evolved into a centre for community learning.
"A School for Community" was established and formally registered. The community members, local leaders and educationists formed the Board. With the intervention of Share and Care 6 women representatives from other VDCs were also included. The purpose of the SC was to manage the school campus, community resource centre which includes a community library and participate in the community outreach program of Share and Care.
